Tonight is the night for the kickoff of football for the South Pittsburg High School Pirates.
South Pittsburg High School Pirate football begins Friday, Aug. 27, with a home game against Grundy County. The following week, the Pirates will play host to Marion County.
The Marion County Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be Tuesday, at 8 a.m. and will be hosted by Caring, Inc., located at 300 Ridley Drive in Jasper.
The annual Marion County Chamber of Commerce Banquet is set for Thursday, Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Jasper. Tickets are available from any Marion Chamber board member, or you can call the chamber office at 423-942-5103.
On Monday morning we awoke to a big mess in front of Stevarinos. A large strike of lightning struck the top of the building, doing extensive damage. There was no fire. Several businesses close by incurred losses to electronic devices such as computers, phones and fax machines. Fortunately, there were no injuries. The business re- opened Tuesday.
John Graham received a call at 5:01 p.m. Monday and was informed that he had won the drawing for the 2010 Ford Ranger XLT being given away by the Lions Club and Moss Motors.
The Fourth of July celebration will be held on Monday, July 5, at the Riverpark Pavilion and Boat Dock. The event is sponsored by the city of South Pittsburg.

Well, here we are, the 14th annual National Cornbread Festival. The main streets are all blocked off and the stage is set. Rain or shine, this festival, set for Saturday and Sunday, is ready to roll.
Time for the fair rides and carnies to start arriving in town. Time to start blocking the streets off. Time for one of the greatest and organized events by a community that I have ever witnessed to begin. Yes, it's the National Cornbread Festival, set for April 24-25.
