The St. Elmo community breathed a big sigh of relief last Friday when fire investigators reported to the media that the cause of the St. Elmo Methodist Church fire on Aug. 18 was accidental. Rumors had circulated that perhaps the fire was intentionally set, but after a thorough investigation by nearly 70 professionals, they concluded that the knob and tube wiring in the attic was the culprit.

More than a dozen Chattanooga fire trucks responded to the fire at the St. Elmo United Methodist Church this past Sunday at 6 p.m. The major fire took several hours to bring under control, and it appears the 88-year-old sanctuary is a complete loss. Hundreds of neighbors and church members watched in disbelief as dozens of fire fighters poured water from various angels on the persistent orange flames that engulfed the roof. Church members gathered for prayer across the street as Pastor Mark Dowell pledged that the church, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will rebuild and “start from the ground level. We’ll just start over.”

The third and final version of Sundown in St. Elmo is scheduled for Aug. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the St. Elmo Business District. This monthly event has been very successful this summer and, for this final event, the merchants have pooled their prizes together into one giant grand prize, a St. Elmo gift basket that one fortunate shopper will win. Neighbors can stop by any of the merchants Saturday evening and register to win.
