The Greater Jasper Area Jaycees along with The Out Board Drag Boats Association will host Rumble On The River World Grand Finals Oct. 10 and 11 at the Marion County Park on the Nickajack River in Jasper.

Marion County High School Beta Club is partnering with Blood Assurance to sponsor a blood donation drive. Each year, Blood Assurance coordinates the Project Lifeline program. Project Lifeline is a series of blood drives hosted by more than 90 high schools in the Blood Assurance service area.

Marion County High School Class of 1987 is planning a multi-year class reunion for alumni of the 1980s. Class members, through contacts on Facebook, found that many classmates had no 20 year class reunion and were very interested in putting an event together. Response has been exciting. The event has grown and is quickly approaching. It will be a fun, laid back time to reminisce with old friends. Everyone is encouraged to attend the MCHS Homecoming game Oct. 2 when the Warriors take on Signal Mountain. The reunion will then take place on Oct. 3 at the Jaycee Building, formerly the Jasper Batting Cages. Doors will open at 7 p.m. CST. Tickets $15 must be purchased in advance. The reservation deadline is Sept. 25.

The time of the year is here. It’s time for Tennessee's oldest continuous high school football rivalry: the Marion County Warriors versus the South Pittsburg Pirates. This year will be the 85th meeting of these two teams. There was one year missed because of World War II, two years missed because of South Pittsburg being on TSSAA suspension and one year because of the fear of violence.

Everyone is invited to the Marion County Fair Sept. 8-12. New to the fair this year will be lawn mower racing by Scenic City Lawnmower Races. Exciting rides and games will be provided by Playland Amusement. There will be great food, fun and live entertainment nightly. Sept. 10 will be the first round of the demolition derby, with finals on Sept. 12. Other planned events include the Fairest of Fair beauty pageant, So You Want to Be a Star talent show, 4-H Youth pet show and archery shoot, XCW wrestling exhibition, gospel night and a host of exhibits. The Marion County Farmers Market is open for business. It is located on Turner Street beside the Marion Farmers Co-op. The hours will be every Thursday and Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon CDT through September. It also opens on Friday at 2 p.m. There is a one-time seller fee of $10 for the season. A Tennessee historic landmark known as The Rankin House has been opened as The Remember House. Built in 1845 by Alfred White for local dignitary David Rankin, the home that was once home to the parents of Debbie Evans and Jody Lofty has been opened by the sisters for special occasions and private functions. They can cater small events but can organize just about anything you desire.

The Jasper Parks and Recreation will be having a girls softball fall league for ages 6-10. The league will start Sept. 8 and will be for teams that are already formed.

The Jasper Church Of The Nazarene, 1028 Betsy Pack Dr., will have a retirement service for the Rev. Lynn Casseday on July 12 at 10:30 a.m. with a luncheon to follow. He is retiring after 13 years and 9 months as senior pastor. Here, he was privileged in helping build a new sanctuary and fellowship hall that the congregation have enjoyed for five years. All friends and family of Pastor Casseday are invited to attend this service. If you can’t attend the retirement service, please come join him for lunch and wish him all the very best.

The Jasper Regional History Museum will have an Independence Day Celebration on July 4 at 715 Phillips Ave. Events will start at 10 a.m. and finish at 8 p.m. Admission will be free. Events will be a Civil War reenactment at the Marion County Fairgrounds, and live gospel music, country music, bluegrass singers, antique car and tractor show and much more at the museum.

Marion County High School’s Quarterback Club recently held its first fishing rodeo. This event was a huge success. The club would like to say thank you to all businesses and individuals who donated prizes and sold tickets. Congratulations to all winners. Fun was had by all who participated. We hope this will become a yearly event.

Let's get creative this summer by way of the Jasper Public Library with this year's Tennessee State Summer Reading Program. Our theme this year is Be Creative At Your Library. Creativity will come to life as we explore the worlds of music, dance, art and more through the wonders of books.

Calling all fishermen!

I would like to say congratulations to all the 2009 Marion County graduates. This year’s graduation was a very special one to me because my daughter, Hannah, graduated from Marion County High School. With no cooperation from the weather, all went well. The ceremonies had to be moved from the high school football field, where they had gotten to practice, to Jasper Middle School.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Gentry Chevrolet, of Kimball, Tenn., for their donation and support of the Jasper Park and Recreation League. Through their help, our park program was selected to sell raffle tickets for a new Chevrolet Malibu and a Chevrolet Traverse to be given away at the end of July.
