The Bryan Institute for Critical Thought and Practice will present “Christ and Culture,” its first symposium of the year Sept. 25 and 26. Speakers, including Dr. Wilfred McClay of UTC and Kelly Kapic of Covenant College, will address questions concerning Christian faith and culture. Sessions are at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sept. 25 in Bryan College’s Rudd Auditorium, and begin at 9 a.m. Sept. 26.

Bryan College’s first fine arts concert, featuring the King’s Brass, presenting a concert of arrangements of sacred classics for brass instruments will be Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Rudd Auditorium. Admission is free.

The program for the meeting of the Rhea County Historical and Genealogical Society will be a premiere of an award-winning documentary, “Of Sound and Fury,” dealing with the Scopes Trial and the plan “Inherit the Wind.” The society will meet Sept. 20, 2:30 p.m., at the Rhea County Courthouse.

Opening ceremonies for the second annual Rhea County Fair, which runs through Sept. 12, will be at 5 p.m. Sept. 4 at the fairgrounds on Eagle Lane in Evensville. The fair will include the Fairest of the Fair and Mr. and Miss Rhea County pageants on Sept. 5, gospel music on Sept. 6, wrestling matches on Sept. 10, a 9-11 remembrance ceremony and lawn mower races on Sept. 11 and a bluegrass festival on Sept. 12. Youth and young adult night is Sept. 9 and will include free admission and performances by local Christian musicians.

Congratulations to Don Mathis, who will be honored Aug. 30 by the Brady-Williams Post 100 American Legion on his election as commander of the Tennessee Department of the American Legion. Mr. Mathis, a Marine Corps veteran and former Rhea County veterans service officer, is the first legionnaire from Rhea County to hold this office. Post 100 will host a reception from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Legion hall, 378 First Ave., Dayton, Tenn. Persons wishing to attend are asked to RSVP by calling 423-365-4573.

The Clyde W. Roddy Public Library will take children on a tour “Around the World in 08 Days” during story hours through Sept. 23. Story hours are Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and will include culture-influenced crafts, foods and stories. Remaining stops on the journey include Israel, Madagascar, Nepal, Thailand, New Zealand and Alaska.

The Friends of the Rhea County Animal Shelter are planning the Dog Days of Summer at a Tractor Supply fundraiser for Aug. 15. Friends founder Rayna Sales said proceeds will help cover expenses to operate the shelter in Evensville. Featured during the day will be a dunking booth with new Rhea County High School Principal Jesse Messimer as one of the featured guests. Ellie’s Catfish Café will provide food, and the Cox Family will provide music. Tractor Supply is located in the old Wal-mart shopping center on U.S. 27 South in Dayton.
