The Georgia Department of Education has recognized Gordon Lee Middle School’s 8th grade social studies Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests scores as ranking in the top 10 in the state for the highest percentage of students scoring in the exceeds category.

Walker County has received a federal disaster declaration which includes the City of Chickamauga. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has set up a flood disaster center at the Walker County Agricultural Center, behind the Walker County Civic Center at 10054 Hwy. 27 North. Personnel will be available to assist with your application for federal assistance or you can call 800-621-3362.

The Lee and Gordon’s Mill, which just opened in July, and was running fully, and the First General Store, which was stocked with all sorts of old time treats, are now under a foot of flood water, due to the heavy rain and flooding which came last weekend.

The Lee and Gordon’s Mill and First General Store are open Thursdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays 1 to 4 p.m. Featured are homemade jams, jellies, apple butter, sugar-free apple butter, relishes, hot chow-chow, hot sauce, peppers, old time candies, stone ground flour and grits, stone ground water-powered ground corn meal, crafts, handmade garments, purses, gifts, antique scarves, old and new quilts and old glass ware.

The annual Chickamauga War Between the States Day will be Sept. 19, and the Walker County Chamber of Commerce Balloons and Tunes Festival will be Sept. 18-20. The City of Chickamauga will be running a shuttle bus between the two events on Sept. 19. Gordon Lee High Class of 1989 will have its 20-year reunion on Oct. 23-24. Oct. 23 will be a family gathering behind the home football stadium stands, and Oct. 24 will be an adult gathering at the Lee & Gordon Mill. Chickamauga City Schools is proud to announce Jenny Vowell, system test coordinator, has earned the National Certified School Counselor credential. The specialty credential recognizes counselors who have at least a master’s degree in counseling with course work in school counseling and who have passed a challenging national application and examination process. NCSCs have a strong commitment to the school counseling profession and to providing high quality services to students, parents, teachers and communities. Mrs. Vowell is one of only 2,300 counselors in the nation who hold the NCSC credential.

Approximately 100 Chickamauga City School employees experienced the virtual realities of poverty in a unique poverty simulation conducted Aug. 3 by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agency. The Community Action Poverty Simulation was designed to help Chickamauga City School employees better understand the realities of poverty.

The Waco, Texas construction crew making the renovations to Gordon Lee High School’s Billy Neil Ellis Stadium are right on track for completion before the Aug. 28 season opening game against Ridgeland.

On July 21, Gov. Sonny Perdue held a conference call with school superintendents across the state. He stated that state revenues for June were under what they had hoped for and there will need to be more adjustments. The governor is holding out an additional 5 percent from all state agencies but, in an effort to minimize the effect on education, is only holding out 3 percent. He is also withholding three days of pay for all state employees, which will result in many systems choosing to furlough employees for three days. School systems will have the power to determine their furlough dates.

Parents of school-age children who live within the city limits should already have registered their children for the upcoming school year. Parents who have not registered their children should do so immediately. Staff members are already working on scheduling for the new school year. Parents of children who live outside the city limits who wish to send their children to Chickamauga City Schools should have already made application. Outside the city tuition is $500 per student, with a maximum tuition of $1,500 per family, and is due by Aug. 5, the first day of school.

Inside Chickamauga City residents who are interested in selling their home grown produce, home canned goods and home made crafts should contact the Chickamauga Public Library to sign up to sell their goods free of charge. Sales will be on Friday mornings starting at 8 a.m.
