The old firehall building on St. Elmo Avenue, currently used by the Community Association of Historic St. Elmo (CAHSE) for meetings, continues to be a point of discussion in the neighborhood.
CAHSE has worked for more than three years to work out a plan with the City of Chattanooga, but that has yet to be finalized. Back taxes were owed on the building, and repairs estimated at $100,000 needed to be made. The plan was to sell the property to the city, who in turn would sell it to the Lookout Mountain Conservancy, who would restore the building and then allow CAHSE to continue using the building for its various meetings. At the city council meetings, however, some of the plans were changed, and the issue is still to be decided. Councilman Manny Rico said he thinks some council members voted against the sale simply because they didn’t understand the history and plans, and he hopes the original plan can make it through the council this fall.
