Friends and family are organizing a cancer benefit for Bakewell’s Vonnie Harvey Oct. 4 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Teamster’s Local 515 building at 4431 Bonnie Oaks Drive.
Straight Up Country Band will perform at the benefit while participants take part in an auction, win door prizes and sample food. The benefit includes free admission, but donations are appreciated.
“My mom has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer,” said Carol Lee, of Soddy-Daisy. “She worked for the Hamilton County government until retirement. She worked for Dalton Roberts when he was county executive. She was a first- and second-grade Bible class teacher at Soddy Church of Christ too.”
A friend of the Harveys, Charles Taylor, of Montlake Mountain, is helping organize the benefit.
“The doctor told Vonnie that she may not make it to Christmas,” said Taylor. “We’ve had several donations already. We hope to have a good crowd. The Lord will just have to be with her.”
Taylor said he hopes and prays that Vonnie, wife of Al Harvey, begins to heal.
“I think it is a wonderful thing that people think so much of Al and I to put on a benefit for us,” said Vonnie Harvey. “I was diagnosed in March, at that time my prognosis was a little over a year with treatment. The chemotherapy is not helping and it keeps growing.”
Harvey said her cancer is in her lungs and liver and scans show growth.
“I’m on my last treatment to see what will happen,” said Harvey. “When we found out the treatment may not work, we agreed to the benefit. When you are diagnosed with cancer you get so overwhelmed with the reality of it. You have your faith and know God is in control and he will take care of you.”
Harvey said her husband Al has played the guitar at many benefits over the years. Al has played with Mel Street, Ronnie Millsaps and Dalton Roberts in years past.
