ST. ELMO: Second fire strikes

Fire struck again in St. Elmo just a few weeks after a spectacular fire gutted the Methodist church, this time claiming a structure at 4011 Tennessee Ave.

At approximately 4 a.m. on Sept. 13, six fire companies responded to a fire in a small apartment building just south of the flower shop. The flames and heat damaged adjacent buildings, and for a while there was a power outage in north St. Elmo when an electric line was burned. The estimated loss of the building, which previously housed several small businesses, was set at $175,000.

The eight people living in the four apartments all got out safely, but the structure is a total loss, including one of the vehicles that was virtually melted by the intense heat. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, which appeared to have started in a laundry room on the south end of the building. The residents were assisted by the Red Cross.
