True Blue Blood War pits Trojans against Lions

How to donate blood on behalf of Soddy-Daisy or Red Bank

• Blood Assurance, at 1920 Northpoint Boulevard in Hixson, is accepting blood war donations Sept. 8-9.

• Blood Assurance, at 705 E. 4th St. in Chattanooga, is accepting donations Sept. 8-9.

• Soddy-Daisy High School is accepting donations Sept. 10.

• Red Bank High School is accepting donations Sept. 9.

• Blood Assurance asks that blood donors tell the name of the school for which they are donating.

The Soddy-Daisy High School Trojans will go head to head with the Red Bank Lions Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Soddy-Daisy.

Before the teams take the field, however, fans of the Trojans and the Lions will compete in a True Blue Blood War to see which school can donate the most blood to Blood Assurance.

Soddy-Daisy will host a blood drive on its campus Sept. 10 from 8 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. and from noon to 2 p.m.

“The football team is 100 percent behind the blood drive,” said Trojans head coach Kevin Orr. “I imagine the majority of our 79 varsity players will give blood. We will have 10 total coaches that will all give too.”

Community members and students can donate blood at Red Bank High School Sept. 9 from 8 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. and from noon to 2 p.m.

Red Bank High School defensive coordinator Kenny Cobble said he hopes everyone comes out to give blood and watch a good football game later in the week.

“Several of our football players will be giving blood,” said Cobble, adding that he hopes the team’s nine coaches will donate too.

Cadet Capt. Hannah McCahill, of Soddy-Daisy’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps said JROTC hopes to make the blood wars an annual event the week of the Red Bank versus Soddy-Daisy football game.

Hannah said her goal is for Soddy-Daisy to donate 350 or more pints of blood. Currently, 100 Soddy-Daisy JROTC cadets plan to donate blood. So far, she said, 400 students and residents have signed up to donate.

“Last year 600 signed up and only 238 were able to give blood,” said Hannah. “It was a record number for our school.”

Red Bank High School student body president Bailey Lyness is working equally hard signing up blood donors for the war.

“We are shooting for 150 students to give blood,” said Bailey. “I hope that several additional community members will donate blood too.”

Bailey, who is leading her first blood drive, said it will also be her first time donate blood.

“I know I’m saving lives so that’s what’s good about it,” said Bailey. “I’m excited.”
