ST. ELMO: Church fire ruled accidental

The St. Elmo community breathed a big sigh of relief last Friday when fire investigators reported to the media that the cause of the St. Elmo Methodist Church fire on Aug. 18 was accidental. Rumors had circulated that perhaps the fire was intentionally set, but after a thorough investigation by nearly 70 professionals, they concluded that the knob and tube wiring in the attic was the culprit.

It is estimated that damages to the building were approximately $1.5 million. A structural engineer will determine the condition of the remaining brick walls and whether or not a new roof can be built. The congregation has repeatedly pledged to rebuild, but apparently it’s up to the Methodist Conference for a final decision. Church members have consistently thanked their St. Elmo neighbors for all the support during these difficult days, and for now the church is meeting at the Bethlehem Center for Sunday services.
