DUNLAP: Indians travel to McMinn Central this weekend

The annual meeting was well attended by approximately 125 individuals. The change of the Stephens County High School football game hurt and helped the attendance. Some called and canceled, while others called and added themselves to the list and attended both events. Mr. Tom Edd Wilson, CEO and president of the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce, gave a very detailed report of the Chattanooga Volkswagen experience.

The plaques for the Show Your Fall Colors were awarded to the following: best of show - Sam Hudson, attorney-at-law, best year around - The Fountain (at the Shoppe), most original display - Four Seasons Salon and Day Spa, business - Re/Max, nonprofit - Sequatchie County Middle School and residential - Cheryl McBrayer. The first runner up certificates were given to the following: best year around - Jim & Linda Jones, most original display - Careall, business - Peoples State Bank of Commerce, nonprofit - Griffith Elementary School and residential - Donnie Pursley & Debbie Kelly. This year, the first Howard Hatcher Business Award was presented to Citizens Tri-County Bank. The chamber board of directors and staff presented Howard Hatcher with a brick for his ten years service as chamber director.

Congratulation to chamber board and Sequatchie County board member JoAnn Shepherd for obtaining master level 5 of the Tennessee School Board Association. This requires much extra work and training, and this makes Ms. Shepherd the second in our county, joining Charlie Rollins as the other level 5 recipient.

The chamber welcomes new board members Jeff Johnson and Susan Merriman as the latest to serve. They will attend their first meeting on Nov. 13 for a 7 a.m. breakfast

The Volkswagen hiring process is well underway, and jobs are being filled. It is very important that those who wish to seek employment with Volkswagen must go online to complete the process. If anyone is in need of assistance, call the chamber or Chattanooga State. We continue to seek Tier 2 or 3 plants to be located in our industrial park.

The Hidden Falls Golf Course continues to improve as the weather cooperates so workers can catch up for needed improvement. There is a local group that is trying to establish a Monday and Thursday low ball game at 9 a.m. CST, and anyone who would like to participate should be at the course by 8:45 a.m., so teams may be selected for a fun-filled round of golf.

The Tennessee Department will conduct a new business tax work shop on Nov. 4 at their regional office on McCallie Avenue in room 607 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Any old or new businesses may attend by calling 423-634-6266 or visit www.TN.gov/revenue for complete details.

The first Veterans’ Day parade will be Nov. 11, beginning at 11 a.m. The parade will begin at the old Bi-Lo parking lot and conclude at the courthouse square with a ceremony. The VFW will be in charge of the days activities, which include a fly by of aircrafts and cannon salute to all veterans. There will be equipment available for those who need assistance to make a mile or so parade route, and all who have served in the armed forces are asked to participate. Contact Tommy Hickey for details, 949-4823.

The leadership held its second class at Citizens Tri-County Bank and county executive Michael Hudson, school superintendent Johnny Cordell, county tax assessor James Condra and county trustee Larry Lockhart spoke to the class.

During a recent discussion, the mayor and county executive brought to our attention that the Tennessee Department of Revenue was considering the collection of 50 cents from our tax rate for the state’s use.

The SCHS Indians played Meigs County Oct. 23 and won 38-7. Oct. 30, the Indians will travel to McMinn Central for the final regular game of the season.
