Walden energized for possible conservation grant

The town of Walden is trying to secure an energy conservation grant worth up to $100,000 that could be used for upgrades at Town Hall and Bachman Community Center.

“Anything we don’t have to spend as a town (is a benefit),” Mayor Peter Hetzler said. “Even if it’s 10 bucks, that’s 10 bucks we don’t have to spend. If it’s a grant somebody’s going to get it. It might as well be us.”

Town Manager Fern Lockhart said the grant, which requires no matching money from the town, could possibly be used to add insulation, replace windows and heating systems. She said she hopes it can also be used to install a solar panel at Town Hall.

“I want to at least look into that for that amount of money,” she said. “We’ve got a good style building for that. I hope we can get a little more green, get into those kinds of things at least a little.”

Before anything is known or can be done, she said the Electric Power Board will conduct an energy audit “to show where the weaknesses are and how it could help.”

If awarded, the town would more than likely be required to put the money toward “wherever they find lacking enough.”

“There’s a lot of things we can’t do, but there’s a lot of things that can be done,” Hetzler said.

According to Lockhart, the Town Hall, with its natural gas heating system which was installed in the early 1990s, can cost up to $400 to heat in a month. Bachman, on the other hand, which was built in the 1930s, can cost between an average $2,500 and $3,000 each month.

“That $100,000 will probably go quicker than the blink of an eye when you get going with those kinds of things,” said Lockhart.

The grant’s details, such as deadline and award date, are forthcoming.
