The addition of sidewalks along James Boulevard, a project which has stretched out since the town received an applicable grant in 2001, is finally marching forward with the Signal Mountain Town Council’s unanimous approval of project engineering studies.
“There will be several input meetings as part of the engineering study,” said Public Works director Loretta Hopper. “Citizens will definitely have input on where that will go.”
Representatives of the Signal Mountain Golf & Country Club have expressed concern over the placement of a sidewalk next to golf grounds.
“I’m not an opponent of having sidewalks, I’m a proponent of safety,” Bob Parks said at the last Town Council meeting.
He suggested moving the sidewalk to the opposite side of James across from the golf course to prevent pedestrians from possibly being struck by wayward golf balls as well as saving the existing Leyland cypress from likely removal.
But officials said additional land would have to be purchased since the town does not own right of way on that side of the street.
Mac Hedges said he’d rather see sidewalk improvements in the Old Towne section, where cracked sidewalks are still heavily used to enjoy “a great part of the community,” as opposed to adding to the “miles and miles of vacant sidewalks” along James Boulevard.
“To me that would be a much better utilization of funds,” he said.
Town Manager Honna Rogers pointed out that the $250,000 pledged by the federal government through the 80/20 matching grant must be used for the project as it was submitted.
However, she added that she’d like to improve the Old Towne sections in the future.
