Longtime businessman Tom DeMatteo and first-time entrepreneur Allen Greenwell, II, are teaming up to tackle the renovation of a building on Highway 58 for their own independent operations.
“For Harrison to get two new retail places all at once is pretty good around here,” DeMatteo said. “It couldn’t happen like that again in a million years,” he added, telling of how the two came to be in business in the same building during a chance game of Checkers during a Knights of Columbus meeting.
Greenwell’s father and DeMatteo belong to Knights of Columbus Council No. 6099, which meets on Lee Highway. During a game of Checkers they realized that DeMatteo and the younger Greenwell were both interested in opening businesses in the same location.
Tom Dematteo, left, and Allen Greenwell II are working on separate business ventures in the same building on Highway 58, with both set to open in early November.
Aside from that, the correlation between the two new business owners stops at the front door of their new business address, 5715 Highway 58.
DeMatteo, an East Brainerd resident, will open his third dry cleaning operation, Harrison Dry Cleaners, Nov. 2. Next door, Greenwell will open Five 8 Burrito on either the same day or one week later.
Both said they plan on being there for a while.
“For this area I just thought it’s what needed to go in here,” Greenwell said of his full-service eatery which will offer traditional and non-traditional burritos in addition to a salad bar. “It’s something different for this area. There’s not a lot of options.”
The Harrison resident said he will be bringing something new to the table, with food not found locally and burritos, such as the Sunday dinner which combines roast, potatoes, carrots and brown gravy, not found at other burrito restaurants.
DeMatteo noted that there are no other dry cleaners in the immediate vicinity either. And his will bring something new to the convenience of dry cleaning, he added, with its drive-up, drive-through awning out front.
“We want to be a community dry cleaners,” he said. “You can come in and see us or we’ll come and see you. We’re not just throwing up an enterprise. We’re hoping to add value to Harrison.”
