Local church offers help for holiday

In an economic time when many are thankful just to have a job, members of World Community Church are making it their job to help 30 families celebrate Thanksgiving with a gift of groceries for their meal.

“We felt really burdened to at least do something for the people around,” said Leto Zacharia, pastor of the church which is moving into Chattanooga. He noted recent floods in addition to the tough economic climate. “We wanted to give some kind of act of love to them. It may be little, but it’s something.”

The outreach ministry invites families in need to send in their requests via mail or e-mail, which must be received by Nov. 6 to be considered. Recipients of Thanksgiving Wishes will be chosen on a needs basis.

“It’s to assist those who are less fortunate in our community, especially this year due to the economy, job loss, health issues, etc.,” Zacharia said. “It’s being offered to give them a helping hand, especially during the Thanksgiving times, to have something while we remember these times.”

Those selected will be notified by phone or mail and receive their groceries at their home the week before Thanksgiving.

“There’s no other agenda behind it other than to be a blessing in these difficult times,” Zacharia said. “At any moment we could be in their position. We’re just taking a moment to walk in their shoes. We want to give them basically everything they would need if they were to go and prepare Thanksgiving dinner.”

Church members will go shopping for all the ingredients for classics such as cornbread, cranberry sauce, turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, dessert and drinks.

“It’s just something our small church plant is sponsoring this year and plan to do in the future,” said Zacharia. “We are doing this to help our community and to show people in our community that we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. If a brother or sister is in need, it’s our desire to give them a helping hand.”

To submit a story for Thanksgiving Wishes, e-mail thanksgiving2009@theworldcommunity.net or mail to World Community Church, PO Box 22092, Chattanooga, Tenn., 37422. Be sure to include the address of the person in need and a contact number. Stories can be brief, but since groceries will be given on a needs basis, the more detail given about related circumstances may be helpful in securing selection.
