Lake Drive Baptist Church is hosting its second year of Upward Basketball with registration Oct. 29 from 7 to 9 p.m.
“Upward exceeded all of our expectations last year,” said the Rev. David Haynes. “Upward brought much needed growth to our church.”
Basketball players and cheerleaders will play in the church gym, which was built last fall and includes showers, bathrooms and a large state-of-the-art kitchen for concessions. The church recently installed two new sets of bleachers for fans to watch the court.
“The way we can reach out and bring the community to us is what I like best about Upward,” said Haynes. “We have fun with it. Upward has really created a lot of excitement at the church.”
• Cost is $60 per player, includes a jersey, devotion booklet and year-end prize.
• Upward basketball players and cheerleaders grades kindergarten through ninth can enroll.
• All players, girls and boys, make the teams.
• Games are Saturdays; practices are Thursday and Friday evenings.
• Devotionals are held between games and at practices.

Haynes said the program enrolled 100 basketball players and cheerleaders for the 2008-2009 season at Lake Drive. Church staff and volunteers hope to see the number increase for the 2009-2010 season.
“I say ‘let’s get ready to rumble’ and basketball players come running out of a fog filled tunnel,” said Haynes. “We keep score except with the youngest kids. We want the kids to be able to compete, but with good sportsmanship.”
Haynes said Lake Drive boasts the sole Upward program in Sale Creek. Players learn basketball fundamentals such as dribbling, passing and shooting. Every child gets to play.
Haynes said Lake Drive has adjustable hoops for a variety of age levels and varying sizes of basketballs for different skill levels too.
