Since giving birth to her first child, Leslie, six months ago, Signal Mountain educator Emily Holloway has learned to nurture a new life and a new career as well by hosting after-school learning sessions in her home.

Currently on a leave of absence from her job teaching second grade at Red Bank Elementary, Holloway said she was looking for an extra project to keep her on the teaching track when the idea for after-school education occurred to her.

“I started thinking about how I could help children on the mountain,” said Holloway.

After reflecting on parent-teacher conferences she had while teaching at Red Bank Elementary, Holloway said she realized that after-school support was what many of her students’ parents were seeking.

“They wanted a different kind of environment for their kids to go to,” said Holloway. “It’s about (the kids) having a comfortable place to go after school where they get that one-on-one attention.”

Holloway now provides elementary students with the guidance they need as they tackle homework and other educational activities.

“Being a mom is really rewarding, but I still get to do what I love. I still get to teach,” she said.

As her specialty is teaching elementary school students in grades kindergarten through third, Holloway prefers to offer her services to children in those grades.

“I understand the curriculum and I know the standards that are expected,” she said.

To ensure that she is providing the kids with quality supervision, Holloway will meet with their teachers from Nolan and Thrasher elementary schools and makes sure to read with her children every day.

“Reading just fosters a whole different type of learning,” she said. “If they can read they can do anything.”

Kids that attend Holloway’s after-school sessions may also count on eating a healthy snack daily and pursuing fun relentlessly by engaging in activities such as pumpkin sink-and-float experiments, art sessions and cooking lessons. She will also offer private tutoring for students as needed.

Holloway will pick up Thrasher students after school, but Nolan students must take the bus to her home.

Holloway is a graduate of UTC, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, and Trevecca Nazarene University, where she received a master’s in educational leadership.
