The local Molly Maid franchise is helping abused women and children clean up their lives after having to leave their own home by collecting products and money for the Partnership for Families, Children and Adults.
“It’s things you need when you leave your house with nothing,” said Ashley Doherty, president of the local division which is headquartered at Eastgate, “simple things you wouldn’t think people need to ask for.”
The business is leaving bags for item donations in the houses it cleans and will accept them in person from non-clients through the end of the month. A complete wish list of needed items can be found at www.partnershipfca.com.
Ashley Doherty and the rest of the Hamilton County Molly Maid team are collecting items through their home-cleaning business to help clean up the lives of local victims of domestic violence.
Monetary donations are being accepted at either organization’s Web site. For local distribution, donate at www.partnershipfca.com. For national distribution, donate at www.mollymaid.com.
“Any gift of time, money, or donated items are always needed and appreciated,” said Holly Ashley, partnership director of development. “The cost of shelter and services for one night is $76 and our families also go through lots of toiletries, personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies and food items.”
She added that the shelter is at full capacity right now, with all 31 beds occupied — more than half by children.
As a child growing up in the Molly Maid business, Doherty, whose mother owns the Hamilton County location, learned early on that there are many small ways to help someone. Her mother has participated in the non-profit Ms. Molly Foundation, chartered in 1996 to assist victims and families of domestic violence, ever since its creation.
“I think (mom) saw (the results of domestic violence) a lot in her office,” Doherty said. “It’s one of those things nobody talks about but so many people are victims of. It was just natural for me (to participate in Ms. Molly) when I opened here.”
Sitting on the board for Ms. Molly, Doherty is pushing for 100 percent involvement from the rest of the franchises in this year’s domestic violence campaign and benefit.
“Everybody can be involved,” she said. “Our girls are really excited about being involved, even if maybe they couldn’t afford to donate. If we put all the franchises together and start raising awareness, it should be pretty easy to stamp out (domestic violence), at least a little bit.”
In addition to collecting donations from the public, Doherty’s Molly Maid is also personally donating $1 for every clean throughout October as well as 10 cents for each clean year-round.
“You can’t own a business and not be part of the community and expect to be successful,” she said. “You have to be willing and able.”
Doherty said her Molly Maid also sponsors two local middle school classrooms for the Newspapers in Schools program, uses almost all environmentally safe products and recycles so much that trash only needs to be emptied about every three weeks.
“We do everything we can to be responsible,” she said, adding that includes heavy screening of applicants as well as adherence to proper cleaning techniques.
Molly Maid is located at 5600 Brainerd Road. and can be reached at 892-6243.
