St. Nicholas School alumnus Jordan Thomas returned to his alma mater with a CNN crew in tow to talk with students and encourage them to vote for him in the CNN Top 10 Heroes competition.
Thomas, 20, lost both his legs in a boating accident when he was 16. Though his family was able to financially support his transition to prosthetics, Thomas has met many children whose families could not meet the financial burden.
His Jordan Thomas Foundation now works to raise money for children’s prosthetics, which he said cost more than $10,000 each and have to be replaced frequently as children grow. A golf tournament fundraiser at the beginning of the month helped bring total funds for the foundation, which is committed to support three children until they turn 18 and in the process of adding a fourth, to $500,000.
St. Nicholas alumnus Jordan Thomas visits with students Braxton Tracey, left, and George Arrowsmith to answer their questions about economics and prosthetics.
Thomas traveled around St. Nicholas School visiting classes and answering students’ questions.
“I may have two prosthetics,” Thomas said, “I may not have legs, but I’m just like you all.”
But Thomas did brag to students that his prosthetics allow him to make himself taller and choose his shoe size.
A CNN film crew followed Thomas around the school, filming footage for “CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute,” which will include the Jordan Thomas Foundation story. The show airs Thanksgiving night, and the winning hero will be announced at the end of the show.
Vote online for Jordan Thomas at www.cnn.com/heroes. The voting deadline is Thursday, Nov. 19 at 6 a.m.
Thomas is now a junior at College of Charleston in South Carolina, studying international business and Spanish.
