France volunteers scrapbook skills

Kim France, a customer service representative at First Volunteer Bank on Highway 58, uses her love of scrapbooking to connect the bank’s business customers with members of the community.

“I was trying to think of a way to network,” said France of the large “business cards” she began creating for the bank’s business customers in December, when local business owners started feeling the effects of the downturn in the economy.

The signs, hung in the bank’s foyer, are a personal way to recommend a local business to a customer, she said.

“When we’re talking to our customers, we hear what their needs are,” said Judy Allen Vann, lead customer service representative.

France said she can confidently recommend Newman & Sons Painting, of Harrison, or Frick Construction, of Ooltewah, for example, because her business relationship with them is also personal, and some have done work for her.

“We know they’re a reliable and reputable company,” France said. “They’ve come in a couple times a week and we’ve really gotten to know them on a business level and a personal level.”

Randy Newman, owner of Newman & Sons Painting, said France’s signs are evidence of how the bank treats its business customers.

“They’re very personal,” said Newman, a resident of Ooltewah. “I couldn’t get that kind of service at another bank. The three women that work there know all my guys personally, by name.”

The bank provides the scrapbook paper, and France thinks up creative ideas for each business. She cut one poster into ribbon-like window blinds for Budget Blinds in Harrison.

“Everybody loves the blind idea,” France said. “That took me so long, but I thought it was so cute.”

Other cards feature cut-out letters, 3-D shapes and bright colors.

France said she has been scrapbooking for about three years.

“You just get in your own little world and think of ideas,” she said.

France and her husband, Brent, are in the process of building and moving into a new home.

France said her scrapbooking supplies have been boxed up, and she found herself craving another project.

She said her bank projects have provided that outlet until her home is back in order.
