The third annual McKee Foods 5K for United Way is open to the community for the first time this year.
Past races were only open to McKee employees and their families and friends, but McKee communications specialist Jacquelyn Webb said the company realized that the community wanted to be more involved.
“We just wanted to make it a fun event for everybody,” Webb said. “It gives them a race in their community.”
McKee Foods’ Jacquelyn Webb says the company’s 3rd annual 5K for United Way is open to the community this year.
Webb said McKee has partnered with United Way for more than 30 years.
“The company just feels strongly about the missions and programs and organizations that United Way supports,” she said. “They’re all useful.”
The event includes a five-kilometer road race and two separate walks, so employees from all shifts can participate.
“Not everybody is a runner,” Webb said.
The road race, limited to 100 runners, will take place along Apison Pike and Little Debbie Parkway. Winners in each age category will receive awards.
The walks will take place along the Collegedale Greenway near City Hall, a project Webb said McKee supported when it was built.
The first 200 participants to sign up will receive free 5K4UW T-shirts. Prizes will be awarded to participants who collect the most donations from friends, family, neighbors and local businesses.
