Chattanooga Christian School senior and Soddy-Daisy resident Alyssa Duck is among a select group of students recognized as a National Merit Semifinalist.
The honor comes complete with a scholarship that will pay for a certain amount of her college tuition on a yearly basis, money that may be added to should she be named a finalist in February.
“It’s a huge honor,” said Alyssa, who was selected based on her high PSAT score, extracurricular activities and exemplary grade point average. “It’s weird to think you are in the top one percent of the country.”
As editor of the CCS newspaper, The Charger, an active member of the CCS musical theatre program, and a leader of the school’s praise band, Alyssa said she would not describe herself as someone who focuses only on academics and prides herself in being a well-rounded, normal girl.
Alyssa volunteered at Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation last summer.
“I love helping people,” said Alyssa of her experience working in the Siskin human resources department and wheelchair clinic. “You get patient interaction ... It’s very different from high school.”
Alyssa will perform the role of Hodel in the upcoming CCS production of “Fiddler on the Roof” and plans to major in English and French next fall at either Covenant College, Lee University, Samford University or Belmont University.
The daughter of Soddy-Daisy residents Joe and Rhonda Duck, Alyssa thanks her parents for contributing to her success with their continued support.
“They were really excited,” said Alyssa. “(My mom) has been inculcating me with scholastic stuff since I was little.”
