After nearly one year of construction and fundraising, members of First Baptist Church of Fort Oglethorpe are opening their new building, The Link, Nov. 14.
“We feel this center is going to be a great way to link up with the community and minister to them in special ways,” said pastor John Wyatt. “We want to make an impact in a loving, positive way here in the community.”
The Link will function as an educational space and family life center for both the church and the community. The name for the new addition resulted from a simple, practical need to have the two existing church buildings connected together and a desire to reach people outside the church.
“Everything we do at this new building is going to focus on our activities ministry and it will be for the community as a whole, not just the church,” Wyatt said.
The Link is certified to be a disaster relief center and will have space and resources to house people overnight in the event of emergencies and natural disasters. FBCFO is also partnering with the local YMCA to host a co-ed volleyball program that will kick off at The Link in early February.
An open house celebration is set for Saturday, Nov. 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. at The Link. Guests will take tours of the new facility and be able to enjoy food and entertainment throughout the afternoon.
“We’re happy for the community to come and see what we’ve done and find ways to plug in and enjoy it,” Wyatt said. “It’s not just for us to use; it’s for everyone.”
One of The Link’s unique features is a lighted cross that reaches 60 feet into the air. Wyatt said that people are already commenting on the impact that alone is having in the area.
“The goal of our church is to extend the love and message of that cross to the community,” he explained.
