Without plane tickets or passports, Thrasher Elementary School students and staff are preparing to journey to the far ends of the Earth as the school hosts Destination Book Fair: Reading Around the World Nov. 9-13.

“Our goal is to turn the book fair into a school-wide unit,” said parent Jamie Rehm, who is chairing the annual event with fellow mom Charlotte White for the second consecutive year.

The women, along with Thrasher librarian Pam Johnston, intend to make the unit a community-wide event, as well, by inviting friends, parents and local bookworms to attend the fair, which will benefit the school library as well as the Thrasher PTA.

“You feel like you’re giving back to the school with this fundraiser,” said Rehm, explaining that books valuing a percentage of the week’s sales will be donated directly to the Thrasher library.

According to Rehm and White, last year’s book fair was quite a success, as $2,100 worth of books were given to the library, a donation that will benefit the students for years to come.

“It affects everything they do in their lives from here on out,” said White.

Additionally, customers may contribute by purchasing through the Classroom Wish List and One for Books programs. Cash raised will also be used to fund general school needs such as salaries for teachers of supplemental programs including art, computer and writing to read.
