Signal Mountain High School football players are contributing to their community and earning service hours required by their school by visiting residents of Alexian Village.
“It all goes back to the (International Baccalaureate) program,” said IB coordinator Janet Brodsky. “We as a school decided we would devote them to community service.”
She said that the school is still an IB candidate and that sufficient community service hours will help SMMHS earn its status.
The football players who dropped in on Alexian said they took away more than school credit from their visit, as it was a pleasure to simply sit back and chat with residents and, in some cases, their own grandparents.
“We were just giving them someone to talk to,” said junior Seth Wier, who took the opportunity to spend the morning with his grandmother, Alexian resident Helen Wier. “Seeing the smile on their faces was the best part.”
Seth’s teammate, junior Cody Harvey, said he shared Seth’s sentiments about the trip and hopes it is one that will be revisited often.
“If we have the opportunity, we (as a football team) would like to continue helping the community,” said Cody. “It really made their day.”
The students are required to log 25 community service hours during each middle school year, 30 hours during each of their freshman, sophomore and junior years and 40 hours during their senior year.
