With Hamilton County Water and Wastewater Treatment Authority now beginning its work on repairs to sewer lines along Signal Road, the town of Signal Mountain can soon begin repaving the road.
“The lateral program has taken a lot longer to get started than anyone anticipated,” said Town Manager Honna Rogers. “We’re hoping in January the actual digging in the ground will start up in (WWTA’s) pilot study.”
Paving will follow, hopefully being complete by this June, she added. The town had originally wanted to have the road paved by spring 2008.
“It would be a waste of money to pave it (before WWTA finishes),” Rogers said. “Neighbors there understand that. They say they don't want it paved and then cut up, but in the same breath (they say) we really need the road paved.”
With an estimated 50 percent of homes on the road in need of lateral repairs, Rogers said the road would cost more to pave on the front end and be harder to maintain in the long run if work begins before WWTA begins its underground repairs.
In the meantime, however, she said it is not dangerous to drive on.
“It wasn't that horrible, just bumpy,” she said. “It’s not the standard we like to keep our roads. It was due to be replaced, and it’s a year past due. It’s not going to wreck your car but it’s not pleasant and smooth.”
