Signal Mountain Mayor Bill Lusk is unleashing the idea of a local dog park, asking for residents’ comments while the town’s parks and recreation officials consider possibilities and logistics.
“It would be nice to know that there is a broad interest in the community for it, if they’re committed to use it before we go any further,” said Lusk, noting that his suggestion came at the heels of several residents’ requests.
He encouraged citizens to write to Town Council members or voice opinions at meetings.
“I would love to hear what people want and what folks think they need,” Lusk said.
Parks officials are looking into possible locations and will discuss logistics at their November meeting. However, Town Manager Honna Rogers said location is not the biggest factor being considered.
“The biggest problem with a dog park is the waste of the dog and people not picking up after their dog,” she said. “We do not have staff to go clean it. We already have a little problem with that in the park even though dogs are outlawed in the park.”
However, she said the Town Council holds the reins on a final decision. Parks officials will make a recommendation after their next meeting.
“(Parks officials) don’t have the power to say yes or no but they make recommendations and we do listen to their recommendations,” said Rogers. “(They’ll present) just kind of a, ‘What do we think about this.’”
