No foul yet with fowl in town

The town of Signal Mountain has awarded its second chicken permit six months after passing an ordinance which would allow the farm animals to reside in the town.

However, Town Manager Honna Rogers said she doesn’t see the number of permits flying the coop.

“No, I don’t see it taking off and having a lot of permits,” she said, although adding that she wouldn’t be surprised if several more are requested and issued. Currently the only two such cases have been from those residents who expressed interest and were instrumental in bringing the ordinance before the Council in the first place, according to Rogers.

Those wishing to keep chickens or other fowl on their property must keep them at least 25 feet away from adjoining property lines. However, neighbors can consent to allow the birds closer to their property by writing a letter to the Planning Commission.

Rogers said she hasn’t seen too many ruffled feathers due to the town’s new residents.

“Thus far I have not had any complaints come in,” she said.

The Council will review the ordinance after one year and could choose to repeal it at that time.
