John A. Patten Recreation Center’s newly constructed Lookout Valley Playground, which was funded by Chattanooga and Hamilton County, is now open.
“We ended up spending $99,000 on the playground,” said Jim Long, facility manager of John A. Patten Recreation Center. “We bargain shopped for the best equipment at the right price.”
According to PlayCore Game Time Equipment supervisor John Foster, the playground is actually worth $200,000 in equipment and materials. Foster said the crew of five wrapped construction of the playground at the end of October.
Lookout Valley Neighborhood Association Executive Director Joe Manning, outdoor construction supervisor John Foster and John A. Patten Recreation Center facility manager Jim Long, from left, prepare to open Lookout Valley’s newly installed playground Oct. 31.
“The city and county combined to provide $100,000 toward the playground,” said Long. “PlayCore did a quality job on the equipment. PlayCore plans to take a photo of this playground to put in a booklet to show.”
Long said the playground’s design elements afford no hidden enclosures, making it visible and safe for children.
Some of the features of the state-of-the-art playground include five swings, a zero-gravity chair, a rock climbing wall, a train, an astro rail slide, multiple slides, a zip line, monkey bars and a telescope up top to view the moun- tains.
“We wanted to build the playground with not just a physical element, but also a musical element,” said Long. “We have hanging drums and hanging shakers.”
Long said the American made playground equipment composed of steel and plastic was manufactured in Fort Payne, Ala.
“We have no problems with adults playing on this playground too,” said Long.
