The second annual District 7 Sweet Diversity event will tantalize the taste buds of residents May 14 at the Southside Recreation Center from 6 to 8 p.m.
“The whole premise is diversity and inclusion, bringing people together,” said Solomon Hatch, community outreach coordinator for the Office of Multicultural Affairs. “We have one every month from April to October. Hopefully this year they will grow.”
In an effort to make this event successful the planning committee has been meeting weekly, leading up to the day of the dessert-filled gathering. Hatch encourages anyone who wants to get involved with planning to come to the final meeting May 7 at the Southside Recreation Center at 6 p.m.
All community members in District 7 are invited to the free event May 14. Visitors are encouraged to bring a dessert that represents their unique cultural heritage or family origin along with a recipe card for sharing. Whether it is a Scottish delicacy or a family’s famous banana pudding, all contributions are appreciated.
Hatch said the event is more than an excuse to eat a lot of sweets — it is a chance to see how diverse the area actually is.
“Last year, it was a rainy day with thunder and lightning,” Hatch said. “We had 50 to 75 people. This year we’re really trying to reach out to the entire district.”
He said last year there was a lot of participation from St. Elmo businesses and residents, and he hopes there will be even more participants this year from all sides of the district from the mountain to Alton Park. Hatch is encouraging all of the neighborhood associations in the district to attend and set up a table with desserts and information about their projects within the community.
Hatch said the planning committee is looking for door prizes from local businesses to use the day of the event.
“I know it’s a recession, but we are asking for anything they can give,” Hatch said. “Whatever they give goes directly to the community. People in the community make businesses successful; this is a way to give back to the community that gives to them.”
In District 6’s 2008 Sweet Diversity event there were around 400 guests and Hatch’s goal is that District 7 will be able to have similar success and nicer weather for the second annual event.
