On Wednesday April 8, the American Heart Association will hold its annual Start! Walking Day celebration to raise awareness about the benefits of exercise and the importance of a heart healthy lifestyle.
Scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. at the Coolidge Park stage, the event is free to the public, and will feature music, free food & drinks, free massages, a kids zone, prize drawings, goodie bags, and a step performance by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Several local healthcare facilities including HealthSouth, Erlanger and Parkridge will be at the event to perform free medical screenings and local fitness professionals from the YMCA will be leading a diverse assortment of short, interactive exercise programs from the stage.
Attendees will be able to participate in educational biking excursions hosted by CycleWorks and Rock Creek Outfitters will be on-hand displaying outdoor equipment and apparel. In addition, Mayors Claude Ramsey and Ron Littlefield will proclaim April 8 as National Start! Walking Day 2009 in Chattanooga.
“The benefits of walking are significant” says Kelly Capozzi, marketing manager for SecureHorizons, the presenting sponsor of the event. “Research shows that for every hour of brisk walking you gain one hour of life expectancy. That's something we want the community to realize and incorporate into their daily lives.”
In conjunction with Start! Walking Day, the American Heart Association is proud to announce that on April 8 it will recognize the Walnut Street Bridge and Coolidge Park as an official American Heart Association Start! Walking Path. This new program is part of a nationwide initiative by the American Heart Association to promote safe and accessible community walking areas across the United States.
Coolidge Park and the Walnut Street Bridge had to meet several criteria to be awarded this designation and will be recognized in an online database of Start! Walking Paths nationwide.
