East Ridge will receive approximately $65,000 in additional revenue each year from Ridgeside residents for the police and fire protection provided to the nearby municipality.
“I’m pleased to bring back this agreement,” City Manager William Whitson told East Ridge City Council members at the last meeting. “In years past, prior to this arrangement, the cost of services was out of line. Not enough was paid by Ridgeside to justify continued responsibility to the community.”
The increased total of more than $95,000 equates to Ridgeside residents paying the same fee per capita that East Ridge residents pay to receive those services.
According to Deputy Fire Chief Mike Flynn, the fire department is dispatched to Ridgeside three or four times each month for calls varying from medical emergencies to fire alarms. Ridgeside has received fire services from East Ridge for about 15 years, Flynn said.
Although police protection has been provided approximately half that time, Flynn said, it is more taxing because officers patrol the area as part of their routine rounds.
“It’s what it costs one citizen to make it fair and equal,” he said of the more than $95,000 Ridgeside will now be contributing.
