ST. ELMO: National Night Out next week

Road signs, lights and ice cream on all on the docket in St. Elmo.

First, some enterprising St. Elmo residents have taken on the speeders on St. Elmo Avenue with a number of brightly colored “Slow Down” signs stapled to light poles. We don’t have any proof that the signs are actually slowing down the big trucks — which, by the way, have damaged the road considerably — but it’s an effort that is appreciated.

Secondly, on Aug. 4, St. Elmo residents will join together to celebrate National Night Out day with free Clumpies Ice Cream at the playground from 7 to 8 p.m. The 27th annual National Night Out is a community and safety event designed to let neighbors get to know each other, so mark your calendars and plan to attend.
