Ballet Tennessee has its Dance Alive and Dance Elite 2009 teams set to perform July 13-24, culminating July 24 at 6 p.m. with a free performance at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Fine Arts Center.
Local ballet hopefuls were recruited at dance auditions from area Chattanooga Parks and Recreation centers. The Dance Alive 2009 program is made up of 17 girls and 12 boys, while Dance Elite 2009 consists of 10 girls.

North Chattanooga Recreation Center’s Tyler Harvey, Ethan Thomas, Nigil Johnson, Taylor Thomas and Camille Evett were all selected for the Dance Alive team, while Kirstin Johnson was chosen for the Dance Elite team.
“We are looking for someone motivated with desire to do it,” said North Chattanooga’s Anna Baker-VanCura, co-owner of Ballet Tennessee. “They come everyday for two weeks. There is commitment to it.”
Dance Alive is a partnership with Chattanooga Parks and Recreation that engages youth in learning the basic techniques of dance.
Dance Elite, the second level of Dance Alive, serves as a bridge for young dancers who are beyond the introductory training of Dance Alive, but not yet ready for the summer intensive.
“It is about developing the whole dancer as a person as well as an artist,” said North Chattanooga’s Barry VanCura, co-owner of Ballet Tennessee. “We want to encourage behaviors and choices that will benefit the student no matter what they choose to do in life, but will also prepare them for professional dance.”
