Umbra Essence Candles in St. Elmo will host Beeswax Taper Rolling workshops each Saturday of the summer in conjunction with World Music Summer Days.
“The classes will be 30 minutes long,” Umbra owner Jamie Mosey said. “It starts with a tour of the workshop, a little history on candle-making, and then we’ll make a pair of beeswax tapers.”
Mosey said the beeswax taper candles are long, thin styles that can easily fit into the holders most people have at home.
Mary Helen Robert, left, is training to be Jamie Mosey’s production assistant and is learning to make beeswax taper candles for Umbra Essence Candles’ Beeswax Taper Rolling workshops.
The workshop costs $5 and Mosey said they will be held every 30 minutes starting at noon and ending with a final session at 4 p.m. Families or groups can call to reserve a slot for as many as 12 participants. Individuals and smaller groups can purchase tickets for the workshops on Saturdays in the shop’s gallery.
Mosey said she decided to teach visitors how to make the taper candles because the process doesn’t involve hot wax.
“This is a really fun project,” she said. “Once people learn how to do them, they can do make them at home since it doesn’t require any special tools.”
Participants will use two triangular sheets of warmed Beeswax and roll them over both ends of a long wick. This will produce what Mosey calls classic-style candles.
Umbra may eventually host more complex workshops for making candles with hot wax and fragrance. However, Mosey said she isn’t sure when these classes will take place since the workshop area is in constant production mode for orders.
“A lot of people just don’t realize what goes into making a good quality candle,” Mosey said. “It’s tricky finding the right combination of wax, fragrance and wick.”
Mosey said all the merchant events, World Music Summer Days, Sundown in St. Elmo and her workshops, are to provide residents of Chattanooga with a new venue for art and entertainment. Mosey said she is glad to see the community’s growth and the involvement of other merchants in the events.
“We’re just trying to create a little more fun and excitement in St. Elmo,” Mosey said.
