New grants coordinator Trish Hardin searching for funds

Trish Hardin is East Ridge’s new grants coordinator, hired the last week of June.

Hardin will work with local, state and federal offices to apply for money for city projects.

“I think the exciting part is on the other end, seeing the end results,” Hardin said. “You start with nothing but end with something.”

She will begin working primarily for grants available through the federal American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.

“There are all kinds of federal strings that come with these grants,” said City Manager William Whitson. “Trish’s job is going to be to stay on top of that and see that they’re managed properly.”

Whitson said the city will pursue energy grants to convert city buildings into green zones, outfitting them with renewable energy sources like solar panels.

“How would you like to have a $360,000 power bill?” he said. “We’re trying to lower that bill.”

Other grants will target the city’s natural areas, like those at Camp Jordan.

“A lot of times you can walk through an area and never really appreciate the ecosystem,” Whitson said. “Grants bring awareness.”

Previously, Hardin served as public information officer for the city of Asheville, N.C., and was responsible for writing grants there. She moved to East Ridge in June and says she likes her new city.

“I really enjoy the people,” Hardin said. “It’s definitely a friendly community, which I like and appreciate. I want them to know that I’m here for them. I’m here to enhance their quality of life.”

She has a master’s in public affairs from Western Carolina University and a bachelor’s in political science from Mars Hill College in North Carolina.

Hardin said traveling overseas is one of her favorite hobbies, and she loves to run 5Ks and 10Ks.

“It’s my stress relief,” she said.

Hardin just finished reading “The Other Boleyn Girl,” by Philippa Gregory, and plans to start “The Book on Leadership,” by John MacArthur next.
