Riley’s Wine & Spirits owners Vickie and Terrell Hurley are getting into the spirit of summer with a festive decoration that has proven to puzzle many customers.
“It has been a real fun deal because people walk in and they just stop because they think it’s an aloe plant or a cactus,” said Vickie Terrell of the blue agave plant positioned in front of the store counter.
The exotic plant from which tequila is made comes to Riley’s courtesy of Herradura, a company that Terrell Hurley said is one of the largest tequila producers in Mexico.
According to Terrell Hurley, Herradura provided the plant, that is predominantly grown in Jalisco, Mexico, to spark interest in one of the company’s lower priced, high quality 100 percent agave tequilas.
“This is like drinking a really good bourbon or a really good scotch,” said Terrell Hurley.
Though Terrell Hurley said he expects to see a boost in tequila sales during the warmer months, he added that the drink of Margaritaville has truly become a product that is in demand throughout the year.
The Hurleys don’t expect that the plant itself will thrive after the summer ends, but they said they look forward to welcoming other agaves in the future.
