East Brainerd residents are recruiting volunteers to help with construction of the new community playground March 10-14.
“We need everyone in the community’s help,” explained volunteer coordinator Ruby Coffee. “It may be located at East Brainerd Elementary School, but it’s not just for the school. It’s a community playground.”
Volunteers can choose one of three shifts for each of the work days.
Childcare volunteers, food donations and workers to build are all needed for the project to be a success, according to Coffee. She added that it will take between 750 and 1,000 people to make it all come together.
“It is our community and it will be our playground,” she said. “People have worked hard to get this and we need to step up and help it happen.”
Residents ages 10 to 13 can work on site with parental supervision and ages 14 and up will be allowed to work freely on the playground. Childcare will be provided for ages 9 and under.
Coffee said that tools are also needed for the project. She advised people to mark their tools and bring them to the school where they will be locked in a secure location when not in use.
“We’re also reminding people that they will need their own dust masks, gloves and eye protection,” she said.
Volunteers should call with their preferred day and time of day to work. Name, address, phone number, age and skill level are also requested.
