Founded in 1909, Morris Hill Baptist Church celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.
Senior pastor Bill Mason said members are planning a variety of events to involve the community and continue the celebration over the course of the next few months.
“This doesn’t happen for every church,” he explained. “Making it to 100 years is very significant in and of itself and the fact that we’re still growing and doing things is even better.”
In 1914, the church had its first official structure built in its current location thanks to a donation of property from Joe Morris, Mason said.
As members continue to research and plan celebrations, they continue to find historical documents and memorabilia to share with the community.
“There’s a pile of rocks behind the sanctuary that’s been untouched all this time,” Mason said. “Men would carry rocks to this altar as prayer burdens and symbolically leave it for the Lord. It’s amazing that things like that are still preserved.”
Minutes going back to the church’s founding days and brochures of the church celebrating its 50th anniversary have also been recently uncovered.
Old-fashioned Sunday night singings are set to start taking place at MHBC this spring with other events to come. The pastor added that they are still looking for people in the community that have any memorabilia that could be used in various 100th anniversary displays throughout the church. Those interested should call the church office at 892-2071.
