ST. ELMO: Church fire brings promise to ‘start over’

More than a dozen Chattanooga fire trucks responded to the fire at the St. Elmo United Methodist Church this past Sunday at 6 p.m. The major fire took several hours to bring under control, and it appears the 88-year-old sanctuary is a complete loss. Hundreds of neighbors and church members watched in disbelief as dozens of fire fighters poured water from various angels on the persistent orange flames that engulfed the roof. Church members gathered for prayer across the street as Pastor Mark Dowell pledged that the church, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will rebuild and “start from the ground level. We’ll just start over.”

Originally, the church was founded in 1887 at the corner of St. Elmo Avenue and 42nd Street and was a combined Methodist, Presbyterian and Episcopal congregation. That building is now home to the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
