ST. ELMO: Citizen-constructed signs disappear

The “Slow Down” signs that magically appeared along St. Elmo Avenue have mysteriously disappeared.

As reported here last week, enterprising neighbors made and posted some colorful signs up and down St. Elmo Avenue in an attempt to slow down traffic. In addition to being mentioned in this column, the signs showed up on several Web sites and were featured on the 6 p.m. news on Channel 12. Now, however, the signs are gone.

Meanwhile, the parade of large dump trucks continues up and down St. Elmo Avenue, removing dirt from the Chattem construction site near Broad and 33rd adjacent to Chattanooga Christian School. The multimillion-dollar complex is located behind the existing Chattem building on south Broad Street.

Finally, the deterioration of St. Elmo Avenue, particularly on the south and north ends of the neighborhood, is worsening as cracks and holes continue to develop. No plans for re-paving have been mentioned yet.
