St. Elmo has just adopted a new logo to correlate with ongoing efforts to improve the area’s buildings and public perception.
The image is the result of community-wide surveys, months of work and deliberation, and years of the makeover process.
Judging from citizens’ reactions on the neighborhood’s Web site, the logo fits, according to Rebekah Forman. She is the vice president and grant writer of the Community Association of Historic St. Elmo, which was responsible for implementing the logo.
“Overall the community reacted really positively,” she said. “When you do a community logo, you get so many different opinions. You have a couple thousand people to please, and they all feel like trying to represent them.”
According to Josiah Roe, president and creative director of Coptix, the design firm which designed the logo, the majority response to these surveys emphasized the community’s current revitalization efforts and timeless historical aspects.
Thought went into every aspect of the design to best reflect the community’s self-perception, he said, from the colors to the type font to the buildings and time of day shown.
Ms. Forman said she hopes the logo will inspire a sense of community and community pride as the neighborhood works to regain the prominent position it held around the turn of the century but was lost by the 1970s.
“While we still have occasional issues, St. Elmo is a wonderful, vibrant community in which to live and work,” she said. “We want others to see how far we’ve come and how far we’re going to go.”
She said she would like to have the logo painted on the railroad overpasses which mark the neighborhood boundaries, and there are plans for identity flags to be hung from street lamps and utility poles much like in the North Shore.
The association currently has logo-clad banners announcing such annual community-wide events as its upcoming fall tour of homes and its spring garage sale. As the final phase, it is waiting on signs for its monthly neighborhood meetings.
While residential banners may be available for purchase in the future, the logo will make its debut in citizens’ homes in the coming weeks as an illustrated postcard detailed with community event and general information.
“We don’t believe a logo or brand will work miracles in St. Elmo, but we hope it will serve as a support and catalyst to the already ongoing revitalization efforts of the community,” Ms. Forman said.
