

Dennis A Sweeton, a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, is the 2008 recipient of the 23rd annual Palmer, Tenn., Veterans Appreciation Award. The award, presented by town historian David Patton, is sponsored by Citizens Tri-County Bank.
Mr. Sweeton was inducted in November 1962. After basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., and Aircraft Airframe Repair School in Fort Eustis, Va., he served with the 70th Transportation Detatchment, 1st Aviation Company, in Vietnam from June-December 1963. He received his discharge in November 1964.
A 1959 graduate of Grundy County High School, Mr. Sweeton and his wife, Dottie, have three children and five grandchildren. He is retired from Rockwell International and Wheland Foundry, where he was a member of United Steelworkers Union Locals 8297 and 3967.
Byerly earns commendation
Daniel Byerly, with the 101st Airborne from Fort Campbell, Ky., has been awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and ARCOM. The Army soldier has been serving in Iraq since September 2007.
Mr. Byerly is the son of Billie Byerly of Chattanooga and Dan Byerly of Bothell, Wash. He is a 2006 graduate of Ooltewah High School.
Trion veterans program today
The Veterans Committee of Trion, Ga., is hosting a veterans observance today at the Trion track field.
A program honoring living and deceased veterans will be held at 9 a.m. at the track followed by a fall festival that will conclude at 4 p.m. The festival will have music by the Trion High School steel band, arts and crafts and food vendors.
Thompson earns promotion
Jack Thompson, a senior firefighter who has been employed with the Chattanooga Fire Department for eight years, was recently promoted to Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy during a ceremony at Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 24, Readiness Support Site in Huntsville, Ala.
Mr. Thompson has served 12 years in the Navy and is scheduled for his second deployment to Iraq later this year.
Soldiers complete advanced training
Army Pvt. Joshua A. Brown, son of Diane Brown of Dayton, Tenn., has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
The Advanced Individual Training course is designed to train infantry soldiers to perform reconnaissance operations; employ, fire and recover anti-personnel and anti-tank mines; locate and neutralize land mines and operate target and sight equipment; operate and maintain communications equipment and radio networks; construct field firing aids for infantry weapons; and perform infantry combat exercises.
Conner M. Meredith, a seaman with the U.S. Navy, is currently undergoing intensive training at Lackland Air Force Base with military security forces as he completes “A” school for Master-At-Arms. Mr. Meredith is a former Eagle Scout with the Cherokee Council, Boy Scouts of America.
During RTC (Naval boot camp) the sailor was assigned to a “900” division, which are the performance divisions for all graduating classes, and promoted to Forward Hold Junior Petty Officer. After completion of his training, Mr. Meredith will provide law enforcement, tactical team communications, anti-terrorism and force protection at a destination to be named.
