Well, I made it to my one-year anniversary. People say that the first year is the hardest one to get through but I would be naïve if I actually believed that.
Sure, we have the same monetary issues as most newlyweds but, otherwise, we adjusted to each other fairly smoothly. As I have expressed, we communicate differently so that is a learning process for both of us.
Last month I pondered what my husband would do to commemorate this momentous occasion. I tried to subtly give him some examples but he didn’t seem to be absorbing those. I had told him not to spend any money on me so I was curious to find how creative he could be.
As it turns out, he is thoughtful and creative.
The morning of our anniversary, while I was getting ready, he dashed around the house setting up his surprise. When I walked back into the bedroom, a gift bag was sitting on the bed waiting for me. Inside was a copy of Nicholas Sparks’ “The Wedding” (my favorite author). On the inside cover my husband wrote that he hoped whenever I looked at the book I would think of our wedding and how we had felt that day and be reminded of our love for each other.
On the night table was a card expressing how thankful he was to have such a wonderful marriage and, hanging on the door frame, was a new black cocktail dress with a note that read: my favorite thing to see you in.
I was so touched by the book and the card and when I protested that he had spent money on the dress he confessed he’d bought it on clearance for next to nothing.
That night we sat down to dinner and afterward we enjoyed our traditional top tier from the delicious cake we had on our wedding day. At our rehearsal we had asked everyone to fill out cards with advice or well wishes and we had saved them to read as we enjoyed this dessert. I opened a bottle of champagne and we settled in to eat our cake and read all of our well wishes.
As it turns out, I need not have worried about how my anniversary was going to play out. I am blessed not only by the love of a wonderful husband, but by so many friends and family members who wrote such kind thoughts for us.
Those loving thoughts from our friends and family were enough for me but the fact that my husband tried so hard to make our day special was the icing on the cake.
